NEC V53A System Development

The NEC V53A microcontroller resembles the Intel 80C186 in its architecture and onboard peripherals. Running at 40MHz, this processor handily runs more than 10 threads in its real time operating system.

Obsolete by today's standards, the V53A sports a 16 bit data bus and a 20 bit memory address bus. The IO address bus is of course the usual 16 bit.

The memory address space is subdivided into 3 areas, and different number of wait states can be programmed into the onboard wait state generator.

By exposing the ROM to UV, different functionalities were programmed using i80C186 assembly into this old system board. Long lived systems, indeed.

Do you also have a legacy V53A or some other system with no prospects for enhancements?
